We all need some awesome but inexpensive gifts to show the special folks in our lives that we care. I’m thinking of your boss, your kid’s teachers, your awesome dog sitter- you get the idea. Or perhaps you need a great hostess gift?
A plate of cookies or other sweets often ends up being the gift for these folks. And while I love a cookie, last year I decided to give something a little different- a homemade sugar scrub made with ingredients from your kitchen! I’ve seen jars of this type of scrub in high end cosmetic/bath stores selling for $20 or more, but this version can be made for just a few dollars! It can be used as a hand scrub, but I use it in the shower on my legs, feet, and elbows to exfoliate and keep dry skin at bay. Plus, it smells amazing. My aunt loved it so much she called me to get the recipe.
All you need is a couple kinds of sugar, oil, and a few spices. I have found that grapeseed oil seems to work the best. It’s not too expensive and is very mosturizing, but feel free to try different types of oil (olive, coconut, safflower, etc.) Then find a cute container for packing. This can be pricey if you get fancy containers, but I simply used small canning jars for my gifts last year. A cute label and a little ribbon, and you’re done!

- 1 cup Grapeseed oil (or olive, melted coconut, safflower, etc)
- 2 cups Brown Sugar
- 1 cup White Sugar
- 1 tbs cinnamon
- 1 tsp each of nutmeg and cloves
If a scrub isn’t your thing, how about these ideas:
- Customized wooden spoons: Painted or Etched
- And if you do want to make a tasty treat, try these nutmeg maple butter cookies or (if you wanna get fancy) royal icing decorated cookies.
- Or maybe you want something more savory? How about spiced pistachios.
