Gulf Shores Steamer menus

A couple of years ago, my Mom started a new tradition: every other year, the whole family goes on vacation together.  For our first trip, we rented a house in Orange Beach, AL which is on the gulf coast near Gulf Shores.  It was a week of sun, sand, sm’ores, and craziness with 8 adults and 2 kids, aged 1 and 2.

Suffice to say, eating out was a challenge!  On one occasion, we ended up eating at the Gulf Shores Steamer, pretty much by accident.  We had planned to eat at a nearby Italian place, but the wait for a table was too long.  I am so glad, because this little place ended up having the best shrimp I’ve ever eaten!

This year, we returned to Orange Beach and while some things were different, I am happy to report that Gulf Shores Steamer is still delicious.  If you are ever in the Gulf Shores area, I highly recommend seeking out this restaurant.  It’s worth it!  s noted on the menu, nothing is fried – everything is steamed, baked, or grilled.  This means that you really get to taste the seafood.  It is fresh and perfectly cooked!  There are a few options for non-seafood fans like chicken or grilled cheese, but the seafood is the star here.

One note: you may want to call ahead to see if they have the Royal Red Shrimp.  These were the amazing shrimp that I remembered from the first time we visited.  Sadly, they had run out prior to our most recent visit and weren’t due to get more until after we left.  Instead they had a different variety of shrimp that were almost as good.  I got a platter of steamed shrimp with corn, potatoes, and slaw, while my mom opted for simply steamed shrimp.  Gulf Shores Steamer serves the shrimp with the heads on. If you don’t like peeling your shrimp, you could opt for the Shrimp PoBoy that my brother tried. He reported that the shrimp were excellent, but he would have preferred a crustier bread.  The restaurant also serves oysters, crab, and several types of fish.

If you happen to grow tired of seafood during your vacation, I can also recommend Butts on the Beach.  They do very tasty BBQ and have an amazing variety of sauces!
