As Amy mentioned last week, we are highlighting a different local restaurant every Friday in August. This week I’d like to talk about one of my favorite food trucks in Nashville, Smoke Et Al.
Now, I admit that I was a bit late to embrace the food truck trend. There are a ton of truck options in Nashville, but some of my early experiences were not that good. However, lately I’ve had the opportunity to sample from quite a selection of trucks and have been very impressed.
There is a farmer’s market that sets up in the park by our house in 12 South every Tuesday afternoon. My husband and I have made it a tradition to have dinner from the food trucks that show up every week. After months of “research”, I have a surprising favorite: Smoke Et Al.
Their slogan is “Beyond Barbecue,” and that sums up their menu nicely. We have a ton of great barbecue in town, but this truck offers unique dishes, including a vegetarian option. The variety is especially welcome since food trucksoften don’t have many options for different diets in their limited menus. My sister-in-law, a vegetarian, tried Smoke Et Al’s Back 40 Veggie Tacos and said that they were quite good. I tend to order the Fiddler’s Biscuits – smoked chicken and a drizzle of honey on top of homemade sage biscuits. They are really good, especially the sage biscuits.
The real reason Smoke Et Al is my favorite comes down to one amazing side – the fried pickled okra. I like fried okra and have recently discovered the joy of pickled okra. Combining the two is pure genius! Kind of tangy, a bit crunchy, and just delicious. They are served with a side of Bama white sauce for dipping, and it’s the perfect compliment. In fact, I want some right now!
To get your own okra fix or try any other item from Smoke Et Al, just visit their website and check out the calendar. In fact, they’ll be back in 12 South this weekend!
Another great way to find any of the Nashville food trucks is the Nashville Food Truck Association (NFTA) app. Available for Apple and Android, it gives you both map and list options so you know where all the food trucks are at any given time. Great for finding your favorite or trying a new truck. In fact, I think I need to do more “research”.
By the way, this post was not sponsored in any way by NFTA or Smoke Et Al. As always, we just wanted to share our great food finds. Enjoy!
